New Anti-Obesity Drug: Acomplia

The long-awaited Anti-Obesity drug is here at last? Acomplia (rimonabant) launched in June last week with a press conference at London's Science Museum. Jeni Wilson is head of brand comms, while Cressida Ward is UK director of comms. The manufacturer's agency is Manning Selvage & Lee. Sanofi- Aventis prefers the term 'weight management', Wilson confirm that the drug is aimed at patients with a body mass index above 27, and who probably have type 2 diabetes.

Rimonabant is available for purchase by prescription in Europe under the name acomplia. European Commission has approved sale of the acomplia drug in all 25 European Union countries, and is expected to be available in a half a dozen of these countries before the end of this year.
